SIX LIVES: STORIES OF HENRY VIII’S QUEENS, NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, LONDON

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens is the first major exhibition to focus on the women who married the Tudor king. The first part of the exhibition examines the representation of the six queens in popular culture, showcasing costumes from stage performances and film clips. The second part immerses the viewer in the reality of their actual stories, with portraits and objects illustrating the importance of the family networks that brought each queen to court. The exhibition opens with the iconic portrait of Henry VIII, placed alongside contemporary works by the artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. His black-and-white photographs capture individual portraits of each queen, as well as waxwork depictions created by Madame Tussauds. The existing stock of track-mounted spotlights is utilized to enhance the individual look and feel of each section, complementing the media and graphics while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. In the second section, bespoke lighting has been designed to integrate seamlessly with the showcases and setworks. The lighting levels are carefully choreographed to ensure the works receive conservation-level lighting, while still retaining equal visual focus across the space.
