NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY SHOP
The re-imagined NPG main shop is given prominent position on the corner of Charing Cross Rd. In collaboration with Alex Cochrane Architects, the goal was to design an elegant, elevated space to showcase products. The classical gallery architecture is echoed through a series of illuminated arches that provide a striking nighttime presence, enhancing the gallery's visibility and offering a new level of transparency both inside and outside the space.
An elegant suspended track system complements the design, mirroring the layout of the adjacent gallery areas. The track delivers a high-quality, low-glare light with diffused illumination, ensuring a shadow-free wash that works well with various product types. This flexible lighting system also allows for future display adjustments. The overall lighting design creates a seamless flow between the gallery's public spaces and the retail area. The aesthetic approach is consistent across different areas, including the Temporary Gallery shop and the First Floor temporary retail space. In these areas, illuminated shelving is integrated into bespoke joinery, maintaining a cohesive design throughout.
